NATIONAL PRO BONO SURVEY

LAW FIRMS

To address the need for reliable data about pro bono legal work in Australia, the Centre is surveying the legal profession. The second stage of the survey is for law firms only.  The first stage was for individual lawyers is now complete.  A report of this survey is due to be published in the later part of 2007.

For barrister'survey click here.

This survey is aimed at firms and designed for only one person from each office to complete.  It is being carried out on a State-by-State basis, and so should be completed by the person in your State or Territory who is most knowledgeable about the firm’s approach to pro bono work in that State or Territory . In a large firm, this may be a designated pro bono coordinator. In a smaller firm it may be a managing partner or office manager

To complete the firm survey online for your State or Territory simply click on its name to begin.

It is easier for us to collate the information if the survey is completed online.  However, if you prefer to do this in hard copy, you may download the survey. print it, complete it and post it to us. Click here if you would prefer to download the survey.

The main questions being asked in the survey are:

• Details of your practice (location, number of partners and lawyers);
• Types of pro bono assistance provided, areas of law, type of client.
• The amount of pro bono work carried out in the last year (if any) including a breakdown by type of pro bono assistance;
• Details of a firm’s pro bono policy (if relevant and if any);
• Details of a firm’s pro bono program and it stsructure (if any)

• Perceived and actual barriers to pro bono;

It should take you about 10-12 minutes to complete.  Collection of this data is important to better coordinate the legal profession's pro bono contribution and to inform government about the professions's contribution.

Thank you for your time.

A pilot survey of the members of the Queensland Law Society was conducted online over a period of 6 weeks in March-May 2006. For a copy of the QLD survey report click here.
