(July 2005) (PDF 326KB) The Centre established Pro Bono Students Australia (PBSA) in conjunction with the University of Western Sydney based upon the successful Canadian model. The PBSA program is designed to place law students to do law-related work in a broad range of community organisations that are involved in the delivery of services to the disadvantaged in our community. This paper, presented at 8th Australian Clinical Legal Education Conference discusses how Clinical Legal Education and pro bono can be complementary concepts within law schools. "Pro Bono & clinical legal education programs in Australian law schools" Information Paper.(August 2004) (PDF 292KB) (Word) A resource for law schools and law students that addresses the issues to be faced in establishing pro bono programs at law schools. This paper details all clinical legal education and pro bono programs at each of the 28 Australian law schools as at August 2004.
Publications 2003Law Reform and Community Legal Education(November 2003) (PDF 52KB) A brief article (to be published in the Law Institute Journal (Vic), November 2003) on ways in which pro bono law reform and community legal education schemes can benefit disadvantaged client groups. (September 2003) This state by state guide to internet legal resources is intended to assist pro bono lawyers, and lawyers and other caseworkers in publicly funded legal services. The guide is topic based and includes links to sites which offer a brief description of available resources where caseworkers may find useful materials for their clients. The guide does not include general legal resources such as Austlii nor simple resources targeted at members of the public (July 2003) (PDF 60KB) One of a series of articles in the NSW Law Society Journal (Vol 41 No 6, July 2003) addressing the issue of ‘unbundling’ legal services. Titled "Pro bono opportunity in discrete task assistance", the article from NPBRC advocates discrete task assistance as an essential tool for pro bono and publicly funded lawyers to extend access to justice. (June 2003) (PDF 260KB) The growth of pro bono in the last decade has included the development of ‘multi-tiered relationships’ between law firms and pro bono partners in the community, particularly community legal centres. This Paper explains what multi-tiered relationships might involve and demonstrates their operation through a variety of case studies. Supporting and Promoting Pro Bono in Australia (March 2003) (PDF 40KB) A comprehensive list of projects to enhance pro bono in Australia. The paper lists projects currently being undertaken or being developed by the Centre and potential pro bono projects that could be undertaken by the Centre or others. Pro Bono Conflicts and Government Proposed Protocol for Commonwealth Agencies (May 2003) (PDF 24KB) (March 2003) (PDF 68KB) Lawyers or firms are sometimes concerned about repercussions in securing government legal work if they take on pro bono matters involving Government agencies. The Pro Bono Conflicts paper and proposed protocol address this barrier to pro bono. Comments on Proposed Federal Court Rule Change (April 2003) (PDF 116KB) At the request of the Federal Court, the Centre has commented on a proposed rule change. The possible rule is designed to ensure that the Court knows the identity of a legal practitioner who has prepared a document used in Court proceedings by an otherwise unrepresented litigant. Legal Services: ‘for the public good’ Alternative Law Journal (February 2003) (PDF 588KB) Describes some aspects of current pro bono practice in Australia, the role of the private and public sectors, the benefit of forging links between pro bono service providers, publicly funded legal service providers and community organisations and the objectives of the National Pro Bono Resource Centre. This comprehensive guide for law firms is a first for Australia. The manual provides practical information on establishing, managing and enhancing law firm pro bono programs. Topics covered include models of pro bono practice, promoting a pro bono culture, sourcing pro bono work, coordination, supervision, crediting time, letters of engagement, taxation, record keeping, risk management, disbursements, clients with particular needs ... and more. Sample policy and procedure documents and sample letters, forms and agreements are also included as well as information on legal aid, community legal services, useful contacts and referral services. This publication is an invaluable resource that will help firms plan, develop and maintain active and successful pro bono practices.
